High Winds Knock Out Power to 18,300 Across Vermont

GMP crews restore power for 12,700, expect full restoration by tonight 

Colchester, VT… Strong winds, with gusts as high as 85 miles per hour, raced through Vermont Monday night, knocking down utility poles and cutting power to 18,300 homes and businesses.  By 9 a.m., winds were winding down and Green Mountain Power crews had restored power to more than 12,700 customers. GMP has called in support crews from around Vermont and expects full restoration by late tonight.

“Crews have been working throughout the night restoring power to thousands of customers affected by the wind storm,” said Dorothy Schnure, spokesperson for Green Mountain Power. “The worst of the wind is over from the first wave of this storm and we expect to be able to restore power to the remaining 5,600 who have already lost power by the end of the day today.”

Customers in the southeastern areas of Vermont were the hardest hit, with the bulk of the outages in the Springfield, Royalton and Brattleboro areas, although all areas of the state experienced damage to varying degrees. Green Mountain Power has sent additional crews to hardest hit areas to repair damage and restore power as quickly as possible.

Vermont utilities that were not hit with damage are also helping GMP crews restore power. Burlington Electric Department and Vermont Electric Co-op are both sending crews to help.

“We are so thankful for BED and VEC’s assistance, and this shows the true teamwork and partnership among utilities to help all Vermonters when Mother Nature hits,” Schnure said.  “There are many areas where trees are tangled in power lines that could still carry electricity. We urge the public always to stay clear of down lines and report them to emergency personnel and Green Mountain Power immediately,” said Schnure. 

Green Mountain Power expects to continue to make progress throughout the day, and will continue working on restoring areas with the most severe damage into the evening. More bad weather with strong winds could hit tonight causing more significant damage and GMP is preparing for possible new outages with additional crews from out of state already headed in to help.
