Green Mountain Power Named Finalist for Electric Power Industry's Highest Honor

21 April 2016

VELCO Also Finalist for Award

COLCHESTER, VT…. In recognition of its leadership and innovation, Green Mountain Power has been named as a finalist for the Edison Electric Institute’s 2016 Edison Award, the electric power industry’s most prestigious honor.   Out of the eight U.S. electric companies named as finalists, two are from Vermont. VELCO is also a finalist for its leading edge work on weather analytics.

“It is such an honor for GMP and our partner VELCO to be finalists for this national award. To have two of the eight nominees from Vermont is a testament to the work we are all doing to transform our energy future. No matter the outcome, we are pulling for Vermont,” said Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power.
The honor recognizes that GMP is at the forefront of creating a new energy system for Vermonters that can improve lives, reduce costs, and be produced in a more environmentally and economically sustainable way. GMP is partnering with the state, customers, and community leaders to transition from the traditional grid of the past to one that is more resilient and reliable, and that uses a series of microgrids through distributed clean energy generation and innovative energy storage solutions.
“GMP has rightfully earned a reputation as a national energy innovator. They are a key partner, along with every local Vermont utility, in our work and, whether GMP or VELCO, we’re hoping Vermont wins,” said Kerrick Johnson, VELCO’s Vice President – Strategy and Communication.
“Our industry is in the midst of a profound transformation, and this year’s Edison Award finalists demonstrate that innovative and groundbreaking projects are underway across the electric power industry,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “These companies are delivering the energy future that customers want by building smarter energy infrastructure, providing clean energy, and creating innovative energy solutions.”

The 89th annual Edison Award will be presented in June during the EEI Annual Convention in Chicago. A panel of former electric company chief executives will select the winning U.S. and international companies.
