GMP Preparing for Wind Storm that Could Cause Widespread Damage & Extended Outages

09 January 2016

Windstorm Is Similar to One in 2012 That Caused 30,000 Outages

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power crews are ready to respond to a windstorm that is forecasted to sweep into Vermont Sunday morning, hitting Southern Vermont first.  The storm has the potential to blow down trees and branches onto power lines, causing outages. Green Mountain Power has already lined up additional lineworkers and tree trimmers to assist GMP crews in any power restoration work required. Crews will be available in all parts of the state to begin to restore outages as they occur.

“Our top priority is restoring power as quickly and safely as possible,” said Kristin Carlson, Green Mountain Power’s Chief Communications Executive. “We are prepared to respond to outages and have crews placed around the state. We are prepared for the worst of the weather forecasts, while hoping for the best.”

The forecast for this storm is very similar to a strong windstorm that hit Vermont in 2012.  That storm left 30,000 people without power, and took three days to get all power restored.

To respond, GMP has lined up more than 280 additional lineworkers and tree trimmers to be available should strong winds, and rain cause extensive damage. GMP urges the public to stay safe and clear from downed power lines. Contact GMP and emergency personnel if you experience and outage or encounter downed lines.

“High winds knocking down trees and power lines can create unsafe situations. People should stay away from down power lines, as they may be live and dangerous, and be aware that downed trees could have power lines tangled in them and may also be unsafe,” said Carlson.

Green Mountain Power will provide updates on the storm on Facebook, Twitter and to the media. Customers may report outages and get updates through GMP’s text service or award-winning app, as well as calling 1-888-835-4672, or visiting GMP’s Outage Center page at www.greenmountainpower.com.
