GMP Prepares for Joaquin's Heavy Rains and Strong Winds
01 October 2015
Storm Track Still Unclear, but Could Reach Vermont Early Next Week
COLCHESTER, Vt. – As Hurricane Joaquin begins its northerly track, Green Mountain Power is preparing for the possibility that it may bring severe weather and outages to New England. According to current forecasts, it may be in New England early next week.
“Restoring power quickly in a major storm is one of our highest priorities, and so we have already started lining up contract crews and have requested other utility crews in the event that Hurricane Joaquin comes towards New England,” said Dorothy Schnure, GMP spokesperson. “This far in advance the path is uncertain, but we believe in preparing for the worst weather forecast while we hope for the best.”
The combination of heavy rains and high winds can cause significant damage, as trees are less stable when the ground becomes saturated and are more likely to fall onto power lines. The Company emphasizes a safety first approach and encourages the public to be aware of their surroundings, never to go near downed power lines or cross running water in a vehicle. GMP asks the public to report outages and emergencies right away.
GMP is focused on safety for crews and Vermonters during major storms, which can bring down trees onto power lines and cause damage to electrical infrastructure. “Power lines may be live and dangerous, even if on the ground or tangled in trees,” Schnure said. “We urge people to be exceptionally careful near any area that experiences damage during a storm.”
As the storm approaches, Green Mountain Power will provide updates on Facebook, Twitter and to the media. Customers may report outages and get updates through GMP’s text service or award winning app, as well as calling 1-888-835-4672, or visiting GMP’s Outage Center page at www.greenmountainpower.com.
