GMP Crews Restoring Power After Severe Thunderstorms

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Strong winds, hail and lightning roared through Vermont this afternoon, knocking down trees and power lines, affecting more than 26,000 Green Mountain Power customers.   
                  
“This was an incredibly intense storm causing extensive damage across the state,” said Kristin Carlson, Chief Communications Executive. “Crews are working to restore power and even with additional crews that we are bringing in, we expect restoration efforts could continue into Monday for the some of the areas most badly hit.”
July is the month that typically has the most outages, as frequent and strong thunderstorms can knock down trees and affect thousands of customers. Today’s storm was even more intense than a typical summer storm.
 
“We had a combination of conditions that we in meteorology dread, as it produced quite a fierce thunderstorm,” said Roger Hill, meteorologist at Weathering Heights. “The strongest winds moved through some of the state’s most populated areas, with winds that probably exceeded 60 miles per hour in some locations.”
Crews responded quickly and have already restored power to 3500 customers, and will continue working until power is restored to all customers. Power restoration is focused first on areas where repairs can restore power to quickly to the largest number of customers.
 
“Safety is a top priority in these storms for our crews and our customers,” said Carlson. “Trees can bring down power lines, but the lines can still be live, so we urge people to stay away from downed lines, and to keep children and pets away until GMP crews arrive.”
 
Forecasts call for more storms to arrive Monday. Green Mountain Power is also preparing for the upcoming storm, and reminds customers to stay safe.
