GMP Crews Make Progress, Restoring Power to 16,000

24 July 2016

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power crews have made significant progress restoring power since fierce thunderstorms pounded Vermont, parts of New Hampshire and Massachusetts Saturday afternoon. More than 16,000 customers have been restored, with under 10,000 still without power. In total about 500 people are working to make repairs and get the power on to remaining customers.

“This was a really fast-moving, intense storm that caused incredible damage that we are working hard to make repairs,” said Kristin Carlson, Chief Communications Executive. “To restore power to the remaining customers we need to clean up fallen trees, reset poles and restring lines across the state. It is an intensive effort and crews are working hard and won’t stop until all have power.”

Crews have been working through the night and additional contract crews from out of state are supporting the all-out effort to restore power. With the extensive damage, Green Mountain Power expects restoration efforts to continue through Monday. The storm hit harder then predicted, and has caused damage across New England.

Green Mountain Power reminds the public that there are many trees down with power lines tangled in the trees. The lines could still be live and people should stay away from the lines and keep children and pets away until GMP crews arrive.

“Our top priority is to keep the public safe and get the lights back on. Lining up additional external crews in advance of this storm has helped with that effort,” said Carlson. “We are also preparing for a new round of storms that could hit Monday and cause another round of damage.”
